Innovative Military Munitions Remediation

Bioremediation PlantecoSoil and Groundwater Remediation

PLANTECO has pioneered the application of multiple innovative green remediation technologies for explosives and perchlorate in soil and groundwater. We are capable of achieving the most stringent munitions cleanup goals in days after installation of our MuniRem® technology, a green rapid in-situ/ex-situ chemical treatment process for bulk explosives and munitions constituents in soils and groundwater.

MuniRem® treats munition constituents in soil at concentrations as high as 20%. MuniRem® consists of selected reagents that, when mixed with water, generate free radicals that react very rapidly to completely degrade explosive compounds and chlorinated solvents. Sulfide species generated during the reaction precipitate metals as metal sulfides. Thus, complete degradation of oxidized organics to innocuous end products is coupled with the precipitation/immobilization of metals. The very short cleanup time and closeout associated with this technology eliminates the O&M costs associated with other remediation technologies.

Neutralization of Bulk Explosives

PLANTECO has pioneered the first demonstrated technology that achieves instant neutralization of bulk explosives and bomb fillers at ambient temperature. PLANTECO uses specially prepared formulations of its MuniRem® technology to achieve instant neutralization of recovered bomb fillers and bulk explosives at ambient temperatures in a matter of minutes.

The solid explosives are neutralized in a solution of MuniRem® in a tank reactor and the treated solution is polished in packed columns so that the treated effluent water is disposed as a non-hazardous waste. PLANTECO’s explosives neutralization chamber minimizes the need for disposal of explosives and other bomb materials by energy intensive and high risk methods such as open burn open detonation and thermal processes.

Decontamination of Demilitarization Metals and Buildings

PLANTECO uses specially formulated solutions of MuniRem® to decontaminate bomb casings, scrap metals and building contaminated with explosives. The pieces of wood, metals, and pipes are sprayed with solutions of MuniRem® or soaked in baths containing the highly reactive solutions.

Decontamination of buildings involves hosing down the entire building with MuniRem® solution. Upon contact with the explosives, the organic explosive is degraded to formate and nitrous oxide gas and any dissolved trace metals (e.g., Pb, Cr(VI), As, Fe(II), etc.) are precipitated as the metal sulfide. Following decontamination fresh water is used to rinse the decontaminated surfaces.
