MuniRem® is an innovative, rapid in-situ/ex-situ chemical treatment process for bulk explosives and munitions constituents in soils and groundwater (Patent Pending). MuniRem® generates free radicals that react very rapidly to completely degrade oxidized organic compounds, such as explosives, propellants and chlorinated solvents. When the reactions are complete, any residual MuniRem® reacts with oxygen in the air to degrade to innocuous chemicals. The very rapid reactions shorten cleanup time, reduce remediation costs, accelerate the remediation process and reduce the frustration associated with long-duration cleanup. MuniRem® was selected by the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) as a 2010 Better World Technology.

PROVEN CAPABILITIES

In DoD supervised tests, MuniRem® has been demonstrated and validated to:
•    Neutralize recovered bomb contents and decontaminate the bomb casings;
•    Rapidly treat high concentrations of TNT, RDX and HMX in contaminated soils.

FIELD SUCCESS

•    At Ravenna Army Ammunition Plant in Ohio, MuniRem® successfully treated DNTs, ADNTs, TNT, RDX, and HMX (total explosive concentration >20%) and Achieved Response Complete (RC) in less than two weeks.
•    At a BATF-licensed facility, MuniRem® rapidly neutralized Explosive D (picric acid, 2,4,6-trinitrophenol) removed from demilitarized munitions.  Bulk explosives were neutralized in tank reactors containing liquid MuniRem® at ambient temperatures in a matter of minutes.

PLANTECO has designed an explosive neutralization reactor for neutralization of bomb fillers, propellants and other energetic materials, excess stockpiled and discarded munitions, recovered underwater bombs and other munitions. This reactor minimizes the need for disposal of these materials by energy intensive and high risk methods such as open burning open detonation and thermal processes.  

PLANTECO and the Department of Defense are continuing their collaborative efforts in 2010 to demonstrate how the application of MuniRem® might address other “Unique Military Compounds of Concern”.
